There are pros and cons to using flood irrigation to provide water to crops, and they should be taken into account when deciding which irrigation system to use, according to Khaled Bali, University of California Cooperative Extension farm advisor in Imperial County.
"The advantage of a flood irrigation system is that it is inexpensive, both in terms of the system costs and energy costs," says Bali. "The disadvantage is that its performance depends strongly on soil properties such as the infiltrations rate and soil type."
